You need to know the rules for the 2020 Readers’ Choice for your vote to count. If you make a mistake, it looks like your ballot gets tossed.
Be sure to read carefully and understand the rules. We will give you a bit more insight so you can vote in confidence.
Here are the rules from the instructions printed in the Davis Enterprise
At least twenty (20) categories must be completed or ballots will not be accepted.
Be sure to count your votes. There are 122 categories where you can voice your opinion as to which business is the best. And there are plenty of great businesses in Davis, Winters, and Woodland to choose from.
Counting your votes when using a paper ballot is easy. Simply fill in the blanks. Count the completed categories every once in a while. When you hit the “20 categories” number, you are good to go.
Online voting is a bit different. Numbers are not used for identifying the business categories and there is no feedback as to how many businesses you voted for. This will require you to keep track of your category submissions.
Also, the business categories and the business listings may be displayed randomly when voting online. The business listing information you see on the paper ballot found in the newspaper, or the business listing information on this page, may be listed differently in the online ballot.
So, be prepared and keep track. It would be a good idea to have a list of some sort and check-off the businesses as you vote or keep a tally as you are voting. Whichever works best for you.
If you want your votes to count, be sure to vote for more than 20 businesses, in case your count is a bit off.
Need some suggestions? Here is our 20+ listing of favorite businesses.
Photocopies will not be accepted.
If you want to use a paper ballot, you will need to purchase the Davis Enterprise; specifically, the October 30, 2019 edition. This is the one with the paper ballot.
It is probably a good suggestion too. It is a little hard to photocopy a broadsheet.
If you don’t have a paper copy of the ballot, you can vote online.
Only one ballot per IP address will be accepted.
This rule is a tricky one and is specific to online voting. The software used to collect the ballot entries keeps track of the IP addresses used to cast ballots. This prevents a single person (or computer) from submitting multiple ballot entries and essentially gaming the system.
The problem arises when you have multiple computers and multiple people using the same network from behind a router. If multiple people cast their vote from behind the same router, all votes appear to come from a single (the same) IP address. This is the typical configuration for almost every business and home in Yolo County and throughout the United States. Essentially this rule breaks down to “one vote per household or business”.
There are ways around this, but we want to keep things fair. So just be aware of where you are voting from and who may also be participating in the survey.
Handwritten ballots should be returned by mail to The Davis Enterprise, PO Box 1470, Davis, Ca 95617-1470 or dropped off at The Davis Enterprise Office at 315 G St., Davis. Office is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
No need to dive deeper on this rule.
Final deadline to submit survey is Friday, Nov. 29, 2019, at noon.
Well, there seems to be some confusion on this one. The printed version of the ballot indicates that the “survey” is due on Friday, Nov 29, 2019, at noon while the online ballot indicates that “voting ends Nov. 30 at noon.”
Perhaps it is the difference between the paper ballot and the online ballot. You certainly couldn’t submit the paper ballot on Saturday, November 30. The Davis Enterprise is closed that day.
To be safe, regardless of the voting method, have your ballots submitted by noon on Friday, Nov 29, 2019.
Better safe than sorry.
Selecting the best businesses in town is a difficult task. There are so many great businesses in Davis, Winters, and Woodland. Too many to choose from.
If you need suggestions to complete your 20 different entries, here are some local favorites. The list below includes businesses that I have personally worked with and others that come highly recommended.
Remember: You must vote for at least 20 businesses for your ballot to count.
The choice is yours though. Vote for the businesses that you love the most.
Abaton Consulting would love your vote for the Best Customer Service!
On a side note, I would love to know why there is no category for Best Coffee House. Barista Brew would get my vote. The Mayan Mocha is to die for.
