There was a great article in the Sacramento Bee this morning about the importance of using social networking tools to help with networking and job hunting. A job seeker should use every tool available when looking for employment. Social networking tools should definitely be part of the job hunter’s tool kit.
Using social networking for job hunting efforts also highlights the need to properly manage your personal image. If you plan on utilizing social networking tools, whether for personal or business use, you should always be cautious about what you post.
Think about what you are posting. Your comments, pictures, videos, etc. should be sending the right message about you and your abilities. Inflammatory or crass comments may not fit in many work cultures. Risqué photos may signal future employment problems. Offensive videos will definitely add to that perception.
Your social identity can be managed in two ways. 1) Carefully consider what you post. Think about what message you are sending when you post your comments to Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Will your posts highlight your abilities or raise and eyebrow. 2) Understand and use all available security features. Know what security features are available with each social medium and use those features to protect information. Share only the information you wish to share with the people wish to share with.
Make the right decisions. It will pay off in the long run.
